Paul Smaldino

Paul Smaldino, Ph.D., is Professor of Cognitive and Information Sciences and faculty in the Quantitative and Systems Biology graduate group at the University of California, Merced.

Professor Smaldino’s research is focused on social dynamics and cultural evolution, with a particular emphasis on cooperation, communication, social identity, and scientific institutions. He is a world-renowned expert on mathematical and agent-based modeling of social behavior.

Smaldino received his Ph.D. in psychobiology from the University of California, Davis in 2011. He held postdoctoral appointments at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the departments of Anthropology, Political Science, and Computer Science at UC Davis. In 2016, Smaldino joined the faculty at UC Merced, where he teaches courses on modeling, cultural evolution, and cognitive science. He is the author of the book Modeling Social Behavior: Mathematical and Agent-Based Models of Social Dynamics and Cultural Evolution from Princeton University Press.
