Jens Hainmueller

Jens Hainmueller, Ph.D., is the Kimberly Glenn Professor in Political Science at Stanford University, a Faculty Affiliate at the Stanford Causal Science Center, and Faculty Co-Director of the Stanford Immigration Policy Lab.

Professor Hainmueller’s research interests include statistical methods, causal inference, immigration, and political economy. He has published over 65 articles that have been cited more than 35,000 times, many of which appear in top general science journals (e.g., Science, Nature, PNAS) and leading field journals in political science, statistics, economics, and business. He has developed several statistical methods that organizations use to conduct causal inferences in various settings. Additionally, he has published multiple open-source software packages and has led research partnerships with governments, companies, and non-profit organizations.

His research has received numerous awards, including the Gosnell Prize for Excellence in Political Methodology, the Warren Miller Prize, the Robert H. Durr Award, the Emerging Scholar Award from the Society of Political Methodology, and the Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching at Stanford. He was selected as an Andrew Carnegie Fellow and inducted as a Fellow of the Society for Political Methodology. He has also received an honorary degree from the European University Institute (EUI).

Hainmueller earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and also studied at the London School of Economics (LSE), Brown University, and the University of Tuebingen. Before joining Stanford, he served on the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
