Marcella Boynton
Marcella (Marcy) Boynton, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor in the Division of General Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Professor Boynton teaches courses in data analysis, research methods, and scale development. Her methodological research focuses on psychometrics, novel applications of mixed models in experimental and intensive longitudinal designs, and the use of quantitative methods in behavioral and public health research.
Boynton has extensive experience collaborating on interdisciplinary research spanning clinical trials, tobacco regulatory science, maternal and child health, substance use, mental health, translational science, and health behavior change. She has served as a statistician and methodological collaborator on multiple federally funded projects, including PCORI- and NIH-funded studies.
Known for her clear and engaging teaching style, Boynton is particularly interested in helping applied clinical and public health researchers develop a deeper conceptual understanding of statistical methods while maintaining a practical focus on real-world research problems. She has taught and mentored students and investigators across a wide range of disciplines, including public health, medicine, psychology, and social science.
Her collaborative work has appeared in a diverse array of journals, including Social Science & Medicine, American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics, and Science Advances. She has also served as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals, NIH study sections, and review panels.
